Early this morning a friend notified me of a prayer concern for his sister who was scheduled for a serious surgery on a suspected malignant mass. A few hours later, he notified us of a second concern: the mass that had shown clearly on an MRI yesterday cannot be found today. My question: Why are we amazed when God does amazing things? We pray for a miracle to occur, and when it does….we’re surprised. We shouldn’t be. We serve an amazing God, Who may sovereignly choose to remove a tumor through the skilled hands of a surgeon or the use of chemotherapy….or He may just choose to let us show up for surgery and prove that He has made the growth just disappear. Either way, we serve an amazing God. In fact, even if He chooses NOT to remove the growth through medical means or Divine intervention, He is still amazing. But let’s not be surprised when God decides to remind us of just how amazing He is. The God we serve is a God Who is intimately concerned with our problems and pains, our illness and successes, our failures and our flaws. He amazes us all the time. Sometimes, we just don’t stop to brag on Him for it. But He’s still amazing. And He always will be!

One of my favorite expressions to describe God’s activity in my life and in my family is . . . “No longer surprising, but always amazing”. I no longer know if that is original with me or not since I have been saying it for so many years. It has become one of those statements that I sprinkle into conversations to point others to the glory of God. I concur that we should not be surprised by the amazing activity of God around us.
I believe that if we are living a life of faith and are blessed with eyes to see and ears to hear then we will regularly see God’s activity around us. The more we trust Him and wait on Him to do His work, the more we invite and allow His activity to be a regular part of our lives. After a while we come to expect God’s activity and are no longer surprised when we see it. Yet we remain amazed by God’s love, grace, mercy, blessings, protection, guidance, provision . . .
I am blessed man and to me God is no longer surprising, but always amazing!

Well said Pastor Tim!
I just finished a study of Mark’s Gospel. I like the way Mark notes Jesus’ miracle after miracle after miracle in rapid fire succession. Of Jesus’ 1,000 or so day ministry there were likely nearly 10,000 miracles performed. Those miracles were spectacular to the individuals on whom they were performed; yet even His disciples second guessed what was going on. Much like you noted in today’s message, we still do.
Nevertheless, it is one miracle, and only one miracle on which we depend; on which we’ve a vested interest, which is individually spectacular for each of us. Mark notes it with a message from the Risen Christ as told by a young man in white to the ladies who came to anoint Christ’s body; “He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”
On to Galilee
